Brown Four-eyed Opossum

Metachirus nudicaudatus

Description:

One of the large species of "little opossums." It had a rich brown dense fur with black highlights on the face.

Habitat:

They are found on the ground foraging for insects and in the trees eating fruit, insects, frogs and anything else they can catch. They are common here in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador.

Notes:

Almost every adult I've seen has been with young. They probably can't move as quickly when burdened with half a dozen youngsters hanging onto them. Always threatening to bite, but "almost" never actually biting.
