Hedge Woundwort

Stachys sylvatica

Description:

aromatic smell to the leaves when crushed. When in flower this plant can be used to make an ointment to nurse cuts and scratches. The plant is picked during the flowering period, cut or bashed up, heated in oil. The oil is then strained and heated with beeswax which will set and be usable as an ointment. Best kept in the fridge for longer life. I found out this technique from this link: http://www.incredible-edible-todmorden.c... The concoction saunches (stops or restricts) bleeding wounds. The plant also contains antiseptic properties [Field guide to the plant life of Britain and Europe general editor Michael Chinery]
