American goldfinch

Carduelis tristis

Description:

This little American goldfinch was very busy in the thistle patch. Looks like he is getting some silky down from the thistle to put in the nest. Often called wild canary. This is the male with bright yellow overall with a black patch on forehead. Black wings with white wing bars.

Habitat:

Kinder Farm County Park here in Millersville, Maryland, has a very large thistle patch in a wooded area. A great place for American goldfinches.
