Black Sea Nettle

(Chrysaora achlyos)

Description:

We encountered a swam of these while diving in Pt Loma in 2012. They ranged in size from 3 ft in length, to around 15 ft.

Habitat:

Not very much is known about this species. From Wikipedia: "The black sea nettle (Chrysaora achlyos), sometimes informally known as the Black jellyfish or Sarlacc Jellyfish, is a species of jellyfish that can be found in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Its range is thought to be from Monterey Bay in the north, down to southern Baja California and Mexico,[2] though there are reports of sightings as far north as British Columbia."

Notes:

They appeared and disappeared suddenly off the coast of San Diego in 1989, 1999, 2010 and 2012 for unknown or poorly understood reasons. Photo by me, from a Go Pro video. Used with permission. :)

I invite you to go to http://www.projectnoah.org/faq where you will find the purpose and “rules” of Project Noah.
There is a blog http://blog.projectnoah.org/ where we post articles from spotters with special insight into different organisms.
There are also the chats for help with identification, and to comment on your own and others’ spottings.
Look at the global and local missions to put your spottings into:http://www.projectnoah.org/missions
Enjoy yourself here, see you around!
