Appalachian Rose Gentian

Sabatia capitata

Description:

I wish I had known just how special this pretty little flower was when I first spotted it! Sporting 7-12 (but usually 8) petals, the only Sabatia in its range with other than 5 petals. In all the world, it's recorded as found in only 4 US states in - Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, & Tennessee. In Georgia (where I spotted it), it's legally protected, listed as "Rare", and is only known to be found in 7 counties. It's listed as "Endangered" in Tennessee, where it is known only in 2 counties – Hamilton and Sequatchie. It is listed as "S2" - some level of endangered - in Alabama. And I read somewhere that it's possibly extinct in North Carolina.

Habitat:

Spotted on the roadside in Gilmer County, Georgia

Notes:

GPS does not show actual location of find.
