Phaeolus schweinitzii
Fungus approximately 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) diameter, with a single stem. Cap circular, depressed in center, with concentric zones of brown and a cream-yellow margin. Cap surface ‘velvet.’ Margin bruised brown. Pore surface gold-brown, with slot-like pores; bruises brown. Stains black with KOH (3%), cherry red and then turning black immediately.
This species grows on wood with a preference for conifers. It appeared to be growing in soil. It was growing approximately 4 feet (1.2m) from a pine tree stump; assumed to be growing on submerged roots.
