Froghopper / Spittlebug

Cercopoidea sp.

Description:

This may be a very familiar sight around in your gardens/parks. The Froghopper nymph called Spittlebugs actually creates the foam with the secretion of urine and some sticky substance from their abdomen. You can see the same in the image below. The actual size of the 'foam nest' was around 2 cms. I observed it creating bubbles for almost half an hour and believe me, it was as exciting as 30 minutes of 'Tiger Sighting' ;)

Habitat:

Rainforest and Evergreen forest of Agumbe which is a part of the Western Ghats. It is also recognized as one of the world’s eight hottest hotspots' of biological diversity, inscribed in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites list in July 2012
