Pied Butcherbird

Cracticus nigrogularis

Description:

A large sturdy looking songbird with bold black and white markings. The black colouring on the head extends to the nape and down the chest in the front. The bill was grey and black with a hook tip.

Habitat:

A regular visitor at a camp site in central New South Wales. The surrounds was open dry woodlands

Notes:

This is slightly larger bird that the Grey Butcherbird seen in Southern Victoria

Pied Butcherbirds prey on small mammals, reptiles, birds and large insects. Most food is caught on the ground. They may hunt in small groups, in pairs or alone. The female constructs the nest and incubates the eggs all by herself but she is fed by males and other members of the group.
