Rock Sole

Lepidopsetta bilineata

Description:

Eyes on right side of body; color: eyed side typically mottled with various shades of brown with white and dark spots; blind side is white. This species can be distinguished from other similar flounders in the area by the rounded body shape and the pronounced arch in the anterior portion of the lateral line. Maximum recorded size: 24 inches/60 cm; size range typically observed in the area: 10-14 inches.

Habitat:

Sandy & muddy bottoms, often near rocky outcrops.

Notes:

I usually catch this species from shore during both incoming and outcoming tides. They seem to move inshore to feed during the flood tide and work their way out again during ebb. Specimen size: 12 inches (30.5 cm). This one was caught with sea worm.
