Description:

Lambiella insularis (Parasitic Crack Lichen) is the dark brown to black crustose lichen, which parasites on Lecanora rupicola - the white crustose lichen. This is a fascinating symbiotic relationship that has been documented. Pic 3 shows the harsh environment of the scablands.

Habitat:

Scablands in a wilderness area near Vantage, Washington. Exposed boulder in a harsh and windy environment.
