Sugar Ant mounds (nests)

Camponotus consobrinus

Description:

Nothing spectacular, just products of hard work ! I felt they deserved a spot on PN although they are seen as "unsightly" on turf. These little mounds with a central hole are the work of excavating workers.

Habitat:

Nature reserve

Notes:

There were many of these on damp forest floor. The nests were being repaired after rain. Sugar ants are mostly active at night and although they get their meat from scavenging dead animals, they live off honeydew produced by aphids which they farm, carrying them around and protecting them from predators.
