Cannonball Jellyfish

Stomolophus meleagris

Description:

A semi-translucent jellyfish and gets its name from its shape: cannonball. They are an important species as they are a food source of leatherback turtles.

Habitat:

Stomolophus meleagris is found within saline and estuarine waters by the shoreline. The waters they inhabit are usually around 23.1 degrees C and on average the water salinity is 33.8 ppt. (Griffin B. and Murphy M., 2011)

Spotted on the shore and just off shore at Huguenot Memorial City Park, near Jacksonville, FL.
