Pacific Staghorn Sculpin

Leptocottus armatus

Description:

Dark spot on first dorsal fin, antler-shaped preopercular spine, body scaleless, somewhat dorsoventrally flattened. To 19 inches, 48 cm (max. published size) although most specimens in the area rarely get above 9 inches/23 cm in total length.

Habitat:

I have caught this species mostly on sandy/muddy bottoms and near estuaries. This one was caught and released off the pier at Barnet Marine Park.

Notes:

Abundant sculpin in the area. Often seen as a nuisance to fisherman targeting more desirable quarry.
