Xylocopa violacea
thanks Ahn Tuan, its funny how there were three spottings of clearly the same species of carpenter bee with three distinct IDs.
SachindraUmesh,
No, it's not Xylocopa violacea.
I agree with jazz.mann: this is Xylocopa tenuiscapa
when I do the the wikipedia for the scientific name entered above, it goes to a page for violet carpenter bee (doesn't mention "blue-eyed), and the pictures dont have the blue eyes that our spottings have
after further research, I found an email from my guide call who called mine a giant carpenter bee, xylocopa tenuiscapa. wondering which ID is more correct?
I just uploaded a spotting of this same bee yesterday. I had been trying to identity it for many years now with no luck until I discovered the "Lens" feature on my google photo app on my android phone (where I upload my photos to show them on my phone). That cool new app came up with "carpenter bee" but the pictures I found of those didn't have the beautiful colors on the wings. I knew I spotted it in Sri Lanka, so I googled carpenter bee sri lanka, and that lead me to this page and this site thanks to which I finally figured out what I had shot. So I joined and started uploading my photos now too. check out my version of this beautiful bee.
