American Pipit

Anthus rubescens

Description:

Acts like Robin but looks like a Sparrow. These birds are slightly larger then a Sparrow but is slimmer and with a thin bill. Brown head, back and tail. Light colored underneath with brown streaking on the chest and a faint streaking on the upper back. Tail is medium length with white outer feathers. Faint mustache and eyebrow and throat is bare of streaks. Behavior is similar to the Robin with it's short spurts and raising it's head. It also bobs it's tail up and down. Bill is pink with a black tip and the legs are dark.

Habitat:

Prefers open fields with low plant cover such as grass and dried grass.

Notes:

Spotted while trying to look for the vagrant Red-throated Pipits.
