Dryocopus pileatus pileatus
A large mostly black woodpecker with black with bold white stripes down the neck and a flaming-red crest. Adult males have a red line from the bill to the throat; in adult females these are black. The southern subspecies are slightly smaller than the northern.
Spotted in an open deciduous forest along the Arkansas River.
One of these woodpeckers' favorite foods is ants, especially carpenter ants. Pic 6 is cropped to show its long tongue.
