Ground Squirrel

Spermophilus sp.

Description:

Desert burrowing rodent, juveniles emerging from nests. Burrows under the Paloverde and other mesquite trees dropping abundant pea pods of food!

Habitat:

Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix.

Notes:

These are juveniles we were told by park staff were just emerging from their burrow dens in the desert sand. All the juveniles were from burrows very near eachother. One individual who looks a little older is shown as the last photo to help and ID the species.
