Description:

A small evergreen tree in the Beech family. This is an oak tree and produces acorns. Can grow to 36 ft.(11 meters). Leaf description: leathery, spoon shaped, dark green on top and light green below.

Habitat:

Located in oak/pine coastal scrub at Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. Often this species is the most abundant in scrub oak forest and prefers dry sandy ridges in mixed stands of yellow pines and dry-site hardwoods. native to the southeastern United States coastal areas.

Notes:

The acorns of this species are an important food source for a wide variety of wildlife.
