caterpillar & pupa

Description:

An odd pairing of a caterpillar and a chrysalis. Are they different species?

Habitat:

Observed in a large semi-urban yard/garden next to a patch of disturbed remnant forest, on yellow walking iris (Neomarica longifolia?). This is in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.

Notes:

The last photo of the vacated chrysalis is from 3 days later (Aug 28, 2013).
