Golden-fronted Woodpecker

Melanerpes aurifrons

Description:

This is a medium sized woodpecker with a black and white barred back. The back of its' neck is orange and yellow in color. Males have a red cap and a yellow patch between its' eyes and beak.

Habitat:

Semi open woodlands and forests. I spotted this one in a field with many oaks, and a few mesquite trees and open areas.

Notes:

Fun Facts: 1. Their are four subspecies of this woodpecker. 2. They eat equal amounts of fruit and nuts as they do insects. 3. The oldest recorded Golden-fronted was almost 6 years old. 4. Their faces can become stained purple as a result of eating too much fruit from the prickly pear cactus. Ref: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Gold...
