Common snapping turtle (chelydra serpentina)

Description:

About 9 inches wide. Dark shell and much longer thicker tail then other aquatic turtles in this region.

Habitat:

Urban lake.

Notes:

This turtle was covered in mud and moving very slowly. I think it had emerged from winter hiding on exceptionally warm day in search of a snack.
