Occelated Frogfish

Antennarius ocellatus

Description:

Black to brown with large pale to orange-edged black spot on base of rear dorsal fin rays that extends onto back, rod-shaped lure about same height as 2nd dorsal fin. This is a young juvenile. The coin was used as size reference, its 2.5 cm in diameter. This specimen is less than 2 cm length and 1.5 cm in height.

Habitat:

Solitary, sand and rubble areas up to 30 meters depth.

Notes:

This frogfish just ate a crab nearly its size! Pic #1 shows one of the legs of the crab in its mouth, not swallowed yet. Pic #2 shows the swollen belly of the frogfish with its large meal.
