Ardea goliath

Description:

This is a largest living heron, reaching some 130-150cm in height. Easily recognized by its size and looks: slate-grey back, chestnut coloured back of the neck, head and below (chest and belly), black and white stripped front of the neck, and dark legs and bill. Distinguished from Purple heron by lacking stripes in chestnut-colours of the neck.

Habitat:

Often seen in wetlands and watery environments of Sub-Saharan Africa - here on shores of lake Naivasha in central Kenya.

Notes:

Picture taken by my wife, during her (ongoing) visit to lake Naivasha...
