Nycticorax nycticorax
The Black Crowned Night Herons are small compared to many other herons. They have thicker necks, large/flat heads, "heavy" bills, and short legs. The adults are light-gray with black on their backs and a black crown. The juveniles (like I have spotted) are brown with white on their wings and blurred streaks underneath. The bills of adults are black, juveniles bills are yellow/black.
Herons are social birds that tend to be in groups. They can be found in many places across North America. Habitats are generally in estuaries, marshes, streams, lakes, and reservoirs.
