Catalpa Sphinx Pupa

Ceratomia catalpae

Description:

This series of photos shows the pupal stage of Ceratomia catalpae, from the beginning (a few hours after it enters the pupal stage, when it is translucent orange and yellow), middle (red, fourth picture), and end (translucent dark purple, fifth picture). In the first two pictures, you can see the discarded headcase of the caterpillar.

Habitat:

Pupal stage, like that of most other hawk moths (Sphingidae), takes place underground.

Notes:

The total time in the pupal stage was about two weeks (lab setting). July 29, 2010 - August 14, 2010.

These are very fun to raise! Since they are already in my area I let my moths go, they actually are important pollinaters of deep flowers.
