Tropidacris cristata
Giant grasshopper about 4 inches long. Wings were all red when it flew.
It looks like a Tropidacis sp. but could it be determined which one?
Tina, thanks for the info about Tropidacris cristata. After looking at other pictures of this species on the web I see if has red wings just like I noticed on this one.
Family: Romaleidae - lubber grasshoppers
It might be possible to find a more suitable common name.
I dont feel 100% confident with the link i refer to, but I am quite sure you will be able to find better information in Spanish.
I hope it helps you Tom :)

Thanks Luis. I saw a couple flying at dusk and they were the size of a small bird, but I could see it was a large insect. Then later that night, this one showed up at the light by my door at the resort 30km south of Playa del Carmen.
Great spotting Tom! I saw them at night in my hotel in Playa del Carmen and they looked all green but with flash they came out red and green.
