Neochmia phaeton
Male: Crimson face and bill. Gray head. Crimson extending to the rump - upper-tail coverts and full length of tail. Black central on abdomen and under-tail coverts. Female: Face and bill a dull red. Olive gray with crimson wash body.
Pandanus, canegrass, paperbark, lush grasses and crops.
My first reference for identification: The Michael Morcombe eGuide to Australian Birds, Mobile App. I saw these stunning little finches while on the Annie Creek walking trail. The first photo is of a female and the second is of a male.
