Belted Kingfisher

Description:

Large blue-gray colored bird with a very large bill. Tuft of feathers on top of head, brownish sides with white "collar". Variance in chest markings in male and female. This spotting is of a male Belted Kingfisher.

Habitat:

Bay,coastline.

Notes:

This Belted Kingfisher was fishing towards the end of the day. From his perch 6 feet above the water he changed position, front to back remaining in the same spot to view the shallows. He dove fast. Caught and ate two fish within an hour. Each time smacking the fish on his perch then positioning it within his beak before swallowing it down.
