Extremely colourful bird. Slightly stumpy-tailed but with mascara -eyes and red patch on neck and crown
It was scouting for a place to bore a nest...and later in the day I saw one (maybe this one) actively excavating. This one was on a large branch of a tree by the side of a shallow pond. Belun eco resort near Katwa in West Bengal where a large tract of lang is being allowed to grow undisturbed.
Monotonously repeated short call. Kuk. Kuk. Kuk.
