I don't think this is a cosmos plant. There were no buds, just four galls on the plant, I am pretty sure. Otherwise, these are the only photos I have.

..or a midge gall. It would be good to get a shot of the plant's flower bud and the ?gall in the one picture for comparison. Is the plant some kind of Cosmos, I wonder ??
