Bottle Nose Dolphin

Tursiops truncatus

Description:

Atlantic Bottle Nose Dolphin breaching.

Habitat:

This is one of the dolphins of Hilton Head Island. There are between 200-400 dolphins that make HHI their home year round. The Hilton Head area was also one of the very first places the Strand Feeding behavior was documented at. (No pics yet of that : ( Strand Feeding is when a group of two or more, push a group of fish onto the smooth, muddy, marsh bank, to strand them. Then they ram up the bank to eat them.

Notes:

Oh. How I love, love dolphins. This guys was breaching to I think, try and get a sucker fish off. I got really lucky with this on. So far, it's the only breach photo(s) I have.

Extremely lucky! I love going to see them strand feed. It is the neatest thing! Do you live near HHI?
