Eastern Gray Squirrel

Sciurus carolinensis

Description:

Skull.

Habitat:

Just outside of a nature trail

Notes:

Grey squirrel and fox squirrel (Sciurus niger) skulls can not be reliably distinguished by morphology alone. Fox squirrel bones, however, tend to fluoresce under UV light due to the near omnipresent genetic condition, congenital erythropoietic porphyria (see the vmnhpaleontology refernce). The skull did not fluoresce under UV light, so it is highly likely to be S. carolinensis (which is also far more common in the area than S. niger).
