Tiene una corteza gruesa y rugosa. Con el tiempo la corteza llega a tener un grosor considerable, de ella se obtiene el corcho.
Nativo de Europa y del norte de África. Región mediterránea occidental, el árbol se cultiva extensamente en España, Portugal, Argelia, Marruecos, Francia, Italia y Túnez. Muy extendido antropomórficamente por la explotación de su corteza de la que se obtiene el corcho.

Malcolm, you're right, this small area of cork is a rare case.
I hadn't realised there were cork trees so close to Valencia, its all oranges, almonds and olives here, with a few pines where those won't grow.
