Western Barred Owl?

Description:

Large Barred Owl, most likely Female as they do most of the hunting. Strix varia or Strix occidentalis?

Habitat:

Second growth forest on Olympic Peninsula in Washington, USA

Notes:

She was hunting a Western Gray Squirrel for about 30 minutes, as the female does the hunting for the nest. This species is migrating down from Canada and is believed to be pushing the Northern Spotted owl out of its habitat.
