Giant Red-winged Grasshopper

Description:

This is a member of the Genus with the largest grasshoppers in the world, measuring up to 4.5 inches long (114 mm). This example was over 3 inches (75 mm). It is a streamlined grasshopper with a rust-colored head, a "collar" of black with white spotting and wings that are marked with black and olive green. The legs (with spines) are dark green with white spots and the feet are rust-orange in color.

Habitat:

This grasshopper was found on the screen outside a house and photographed on a cement step in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador (700 masl).

Notes:

Large enough that it is somewhat painful when they bite, but not umbearably so 😊.
