Colinus virginianus
Male quail approximately 10 inches tall with a small head, ‘chunky’ body, and short tail. Bill is short, curved, dark brown-black. Male has white brow, and a white throat with a black border. Plumage is rufous with more gray on breast/belly and more brown on back; the tail is gray with some brown. The Northern Bobwhite lacks the top-knot feather characteristic of other quail species. {Female is duller in coloring].
Covey of mostly males with one or two females foraging at edge of grassy field.
