Red Langur

Presbytis rubicunda

Description:

Happy World Wildlife Day! I'm sharing this special primate as today's spotting as it is a wildlife icon at the project site I am working in. This monkey comes with a lot of names - Red Leaf Monkey, Maroon Langur, Red Langur. They are one of the 2 primate species in the region well-known for their red colour, the other one being the more popular orangutan. They are often seen feeding on leaves with a small family group.

Habitat:

They are endemic to Borneo, found in mostly primary rainforests.

Notes:

Most of the population of these monkeys are generally shy and scared of humans as they are still hunted for their meat. However, populations living in protected areas has learned to coexist alongside humans when they are well protected.
