Description:

Fast flying bird, opal colours of blues & greens on head cap, back, wings & tail, underneath a buff blended into pale rusty orange also on front of head, dark/black strip from black beak under eye around to back of head, rusty orange or buff collar around neck. Beak long and strong, dark eyes, adults grow to around 23cm. Feeds on insects, lizards, sometimes aquatic creatures such as small fish, nymphs...

Habitat:

Open forest to woodland, often also near water such as swamps and dams, wetlands where there are trees to sit in. Found throughout much of Australia.
