Red Fox

Vulpes vulpes

Habitat:

Brushy open areas.

Notes:

When the winter is rough I put out cat food for fox and raccoons, this beauty came in the early morning for a snack. Nervous but hungry so settled in while long enough so I could take photographs. When it left it walked with such a spring in its step its feet barely touched the ground. I am of two minds about feeding wild animals: I love to watch them, know they are neighbors and help them out when things are tough. But I realize it is not safe for them to lose their fear of humans nor to become too dependent on us.

Great pictures. Make me think of the red fox I met a few years ago on an early morning after a pack of fresh snow.

I know what you mean about the spring in their step ... somehow it's like they barely even touch the ground.

For some reason, I just don't worry so much about foxes becomign dependent or losing their fear. Not a scientific opinion, by any stretch -- they just seem so wary, so wild, even when given the opportunity to become comfortable with us.
