Catalpa bignonioides

Description:

Es un árbol de hojas caducas de 15 a 18 m de altura, con un tronco de 1 m de diámetro, marrón a gris. Las hojas son grandes, acorazonadas, de 2 a 3 dm de longitud y 1,5 a 2 dm de ancho. Las flores son de 2 a 4 cm, atrompeteadas, blancas con manchas dentro amarillas; en panículas entre 20 a 40. El fruto es una vaina grande y larga (casi como una legumbre) de 2- a 4 dm de long. y 8 a 10 mm de diámetro; que siguen fijas al árbol durante el invierno. Las vainas tienen numerosas semillas pardas achatadas con dos alas delgadas.

Habitat:

Jardines del cauce del río Turia. Se encuentra con frecuencia en la mitad Sur de España. Prefiere suelo húmedo y pleno sol, se ha naturalizado en todo el mundo. Es una especie que resiste bien la polución.

I love catalpa trees: their huge leaves, beautiful flowers, and long seed pods. When Spring arrives and they're in full bloom, there's no prettier tree.

These are very popular in the southeast US and are used to farm a type of caterpillar called "catalpa worms" (Ceratomia catalpae) to use as bait for fishing. They're quite popular!

Catalapa tree. When I was a girl taking care of our chickens. I would wait for the Catalapa pods to dry and then shake them to release the seeds. The chickens loved them!
