Harbor Seal

Phoca vitulina

Description:

Largest group I have ever seen. Around Kodiak, Sea Lions are a lot more common. I only occasionally see seals around the mouths of rivers hoping to catch salmon. This area didn't seem to have any sea lions so there were several small groups of seals around. One group had a much larger, bigger one than all the rest (photo 2).

Habitat:

Rocky shores of a small island, "Bird Island"

Nice series Machi. Love that last shot.

No I don't. I'm guessing they find areas like this one where they can dry off away from town a little ways. Previously I have only seen them swimming at the mouths of rivers, not out of the water.

If you don't see them often, do you know where they hang out? Thanks for the cool fotos Machi.
