Gray Squirrel

Sciurus carolinensis

Description:

While this may not seem like such a big deal to spot a gray squirrel, for this area it's monumental! Most of the squirrels here are fox squirrels (Sciurus niger), which are not native to the area and have driven the native gray squirrels out. This guy was spotted in the picnic area at Placerita Canyon, and I heard from a docent there that two gray squirrels were later scene. Fingers crossed that they can attempt to bring back a population to the park!

Habitat:

Riparian
