It looks like a star magnolia. I grew up in Alabama and have seen quite a few of them but can't tell enough from the picture. If it has the magnolia fragrance I'd be sure of that part. If it is blooming now (early spring) before the leaves and is a bushy tree, then I'd bet on it being a star magnolia. And thank you for your suggestion on my unidentified flower - I'll look into your idea.
