Diana fritillary (female)

Description:

The female of the species is dark blue on the top of wings with distinctive white and iridescent blue markings. Wingspan 9-11 cm. The underside is dusty to burnt orange (pic 4).

Habitat:

Spotted on a deciduous tree in a large meadow. Mixed woods and a creek nearby.

Notes:

The Diana fritillary is the state butterfly of Arkansas.

Thanks, Mark. I hope to find more of these in the future. They're not very common and have a relatively small range.
