by-the-wind-sailors

Velella

Description:

Resembles a sail There were thousands of them on beach ranging in size from about 1-1/2 - 4 inches Oval in basic shape Flat bottom on most had BLUE around edge which had hairy below. Top stood perpendicular and is transparent. Has ribs/lines like tree rings I am guessing that the standing up part acts as a sail and that is their means of travel ?!

Habitat:

Ocean

Notes:

I have been to this beach very many times as I live close by but have never encountered this before There were thousands of them on beach ranging in size from about 1-1/2 - 4 inches Oval in basic shape Flat bottom on most had BLUE around edge which had hairy below. Top stood perpendicular and is transparent. Has ribs/lines like tree rings I am guessing that the standing up part acts as a sail and that is their means of travel ?!
