Big Leaf Maple

Description:

This tree lives in the Pacific Coast region. The leaves are 15-30 cm across and can turn gold and yellow. The tree can live for 300 years.

Habitat:

The Pacific coast region with well drained soil. The tree loves sun.

Notes:

I measured the circumference by using my armspan. I estimated my armspan was 50 inches (using a piece of paper to measure) x 3 armspans = 150 inches + 12 extra inches= 162 inches 12 inches/foot=13.5 feet circumference I measured the canopy on Google Earth to be 72 feet. The Big Leaf Maple at English Camp on San Juan Island had a canopy of 104 feet and was the biggest Big Leaf Maple in the world. It was struck by lightening in 1970. We measured the canopy to be 83 feet on Google Earth now. The current biggest Big Leaf Maple is in Oregon with circumference of 32 feet and canopy of 93 ft.
