Heliconius charithonia
There were several of these striking longwing butterflies in the gardens feeding on Lantana and fiddlewood. Their narrow wings are black with white or yellow stripes measuring 72-100 mm.
Spotted at the National butterfly Center near Mission, Texas.
They have a strong toxicity due to their diet that helps ward off predators. This is a pollinating butterfly. They roost at night up to 60 individuals. Range from Central America to South Texas and Florida.
