This is the Eastern Ratsnake (Pantherophis allegheniensis). Under the old taxonomy we would call this a Yellow Ratsnake. Some of us still do and I would call this a Yellow Rat if I was in the field.

I'm not a herptologist, but I think you are right that this is a rat snake.
