Neurothemis fluctuans
Botanic Gardens
Certainly not Camacinia gigantea. Though that does exist in Singapore, the wing colouration extends only just beyond the wing nodes and not up to the pterostigmas. It's also very large.
The location (Singapore), the shape of the wing colouration and the brownish abdominal colour make this certainly N. fluctuans. It is the most common dragonfly in Singapore [Tang Hun Bun]. N. ramburii is similar but is not, to my admittedly limited knowledge, recorded in Singapore.
Interestingly, I do not use a macro lens, but a powerful zoom lens at close to minimum focus distance. The same lens that I use for birds. Normally a Sigma 135-400 APO. Thats 800mm, or 16x standard, on my Olympus E500. That way I am more than 2 metres from the subject so it is not frightened.
This picture is impressive, that is beautiful color and details are very visible :) This week I'm buying a macro lens. I'll try to photograph insects for the first time. I would like to be able to get that kind of detail ... Nice pictures :))
