Widow Skimmer

Libellula luctuosa

Description:

These large dragonflies have large dark spots at the base of each wing. Males have white patches in mid-wing (shown above) and have increasingly pruinose (bluish-white) abdomens as they mature. Females have darker abdomens with yellow triangles along the sides and no white wing patches.

Habitat:

Larvae live in wetlands and ponds. Adults often are found in grasslands and along the edge of wetlands.

Notes:

Might be confused with the 12-spotted skimmer.
